YOUNG cyclists are being offered the opportunity to swap their local park for a real-life motor racing circuit later this month (February) as part of a new partnership between Rockingham and British Cycling.

The Northamptonshire circuit has teamed up with the UK’s governing body for cycling to host one of its Go-Ride Holiday Coaching sessions during the half-term school programme taking place from February 15-19.

As part of the session cyclists aged 16 years or younger will have the chance to improve their riding skills and learn various racing techniques on Rockingham’s 1.7-mile National Circuit on Tuesday, February 16.

Rockingham Director Charlotte Orton, said: “We are delighted to be able to work with British Cycling and this partnership is another example of the excellent community involvement and education programme we have introduced at the circuit.

“The facilities at Rockingham are perfect for this type of event as we can provide a safe and secure environment for young riders to improve their riding skills and techniques, while also having fun learning something they enjoy.

“The Go-Ride Holiday Coaching session is a brilliant way to get young people involved in the world of cycling and to introduce them to one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, which echoes our aims to get youngsters involved in motorsport.”

To take part riders need a road racing bike with dropped handlebars and a helmet. No racing experience is necessary as participants will practice techniques and tactics during specific coaching activities and controlled races.

British Cycling’s Eastern Regional Go-Ride Coach Alison Lilley said: “Our nearest purpose-built road facility is in Essex so to work in a traffic-free road environment such as Rockingham is a unique opportunity for young riders and our coaching team. It enables riders to practice in a controlled environment making it fun and safe to learn.

“The possibility of further development work by British Cycling at Rockingham will also help complement and enhance the work currently done by our local Go-Ride community clubs in Kings Cliffe, Kettering, Market Harborough and Spalding.”
