Rockingham’s dynamic Wet Grip Area will push you beyond the limit in a unique controlled environment. Combining a kick plate, water walls and a polished surface, so smooth it’s like ice, it’s the perfect place to hone advanced driving skills and demonstrate the latest in automotive safety technology.

Our Wet Grip Area was designed in conjunction with MIRA consultants, to meet exacting manufacturer testing and driver training standards.

The Wet Grip Area is perfect for driver training or for giving dealers and customers the chance to try out the benefits of new product developments in a safe manner. Unique to the UK, the facility can simulate a variety of driving conditions including ice, rain and slippery wet leaves.

These different road conditions are simulated at much slower speeds than in normal driving and in a fully controlled environment.

The area is designed to give drivers a greater understanding of the latest ABS, traction control and crash mitigating technologies, and the way that they affect vehicle control.

The facility comprises four main elements, each providing a very different challenge:

Kick Plate
The hydraulic kick plate facility actively engages various electronic systems by ‘kicking’ the rear wheels as a vehicle passes over it. This destabalises the car as you enter the Performance Surface area.

Performance Surface
Our Performance Surface area allows you to understand and demonstrate under-steer and over-steer characteristics in vehicles, helping to sharpen car control skills.

Water Walls
The water walls add a new element to ‘steer and avoid’ tests. Randomly programmable water jets ensure that this is the safest way to simulate an emergency avoidance manoeuvre.

Basalt Tiles
Our seven metre wide polished basalt tile surface provides an experience similar to driving on sheet ice - the ultimate test for the latest in traction control technologies.
